Stegosaurus
Stegosaurus was the main dinosaurs in the species Stegosauridae. It’s name means “roof lizard” or “covered lizard”, in reference to its plates, which stick out of its back. A large, heavily built, herbivorous quadruped, Stegosaurus had a distinctive and unusual posture, with a heavily rounded back, short forelimbs, head held low to the ground and a stiffened tail held high in the air. Scientists have debated, were Stegosaurus’ plates for protection, heat, or mating? New technology has shown that these plates could be flushed with blood, like your sheeks get flushed when you have just run, and scare predators, as well as attract mates. Stegosaurus also had four long spikes on the end of its tail, two going each direction. Each one was about 3 feet long. These could have killed almost any predator that attacked Stegosaurus. It could swing its tail into a predator, and BAMMO, they would be flat on the ground. They could easily wound, and maybe even kill a predator. The only way that predators could kill stegosaurus was to somehow be able to stay away from those spikes. Most predators were scared of Stegosaurus’ ‘display’ of color which it flushes into its plates, confusing, and startling a predator at the same time. Stegosaurus lived in herds. Species of Stegosaurus have been found all over the world. Stegosaurus grew to be about 30 feet long and 14 feet high. Here are some pictures of Stegosaurus.
